What are the advantages of Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT)?
Bioidentical means that the hormones are human-identical to the ones found in our own bodies. The body can’t distinguish between bioidentical hormones and the ones produced by your ovaries or testicles.
Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy is a safe way to replace the hormones men and women lose over the course of our lives as we age. Your hormones are restored to more youthful levels resulting in more energy, a sharper memory, stronger bones, a healthier heart, and a more youthful glow. The treatment may come in patch form, cream form, pill form or pellet form.

Disease prevention, and overall good health, are important to us all, especially as we age. And one of the main ways our bodies fight diseases and overall bodily health is through balanced hormones. The fact is, after the age of 30, we will all lose between 3-10% of hormones in our bodies each year, which means aging makes us more susceptible to disease and ailments.
The good news is there are ways to balance hormones, in effect keeping your body armed and ready for the aging process. One of the most trusted therapies available today is the Biote’s hormone pellet system.

GOOD FAQ
WHAT ARE HORMONE PELLETS?
Hormone pellets are made of pure human-identical sex hormones, estradiol or testosterone, that are derived from natural plant sources (naturally occurring, so they include no artificially created materials). You may have also heard hormone pellets referred to as “bio-identical” hormones. The hormones are pressed or fused into very small solid cylinders called pellets, ranging in size from a grain of rice to that of a Tic Tac. In the US, the best pellets are made and customized for patients’ needs by certified specialized compounding pharmacists under stringent guidelines and delivered to us sealed in sterile glass vials.
HOW ARE THE PELLETS INSERTED INSIDE THE BODY?
Pellets are inserted in the fatty layer under the skin of the upper buttocks, abdomen and hip area using special instruments that have been specifically engineered for hormone pellet insertion. The procedure itself takes no more than five minutes and is painless because your medical provider will use a local anesthetic. The small skin access port where the pellet is introduced into the fatty tissue is closed with steri-strips. To achieve full hormonal imbalance correction in all patients, only an experienced medical provider trained in the skills required to perform the procedure should be trusted. Our doctors and healthcare professionals are versed in proper dosing and technique. They will excel and meet all your expectations.

ARE PELLETS BETTER THAN CREAMS, GELS, PILLS AND/OR INJECTIONS?
Pellets are always implanted in the fatty layer of the buttocks or abdomen providing very smooth, stable and consistent levels of hormones. Creams and gels may fluctuate due to skin’s erratic absorption. Thus, the levels actually absorbed by the blood are inconsistent, which makes the overall therapy inconsistent. Many patients also prefer convenience of pellets. Once they’re in, there’s nothing else to do. Pellets don’t require the patient to remember when to take a pill or receive an injection. The pellets are made up of pure hormones, which are not metabolized through your body, a process which can break a pill down and provide inconsistent delivery. Pellet insertion allows the blood to absorb the pure hormone in a consistent manner.
DO PELLETS PREVENT TRANSFERENCE TO OTHERS?
Yes, one of the main issues with creams and gels is transference to others. Maybe you’re a grandfather who doesn’t want to touch his grandchildren for fear of accidental transference. That kind of worry is eliminated with pellets.
WHAT ARE OTHER BENEFITS OF ESTROGEN PELLETS TO WOMEN?
Estrogen in its active form is estradiol pellets have been shown to help with the following:
- Decreased migraines and menstrual headaches.
- Alleviation of menopausal symptoms, including hot flashes, and heart palpitations.
- Sleep issues and insomnia.
- Sexual problems such as loss of libido and painful intercourse as a result of vaginal dryness.
- Chronic fatigue, depression, irritability, poor memory, foggy brain and decreased concentration.
- Body aches and arthritis improve when diminishing hormones are optimized.
IN WHAT SETTING IS THE PELLET INSERTION DONE?
In our private facility in Indianapolis, IN. You won’t have to visit an intimidating operating room. This is a simple procedure.
WHEN WILL THE EFFECTS START TO SET IN AND SYMPTOMS START TO DECREASE?
Some patients begin to feel better within one or two days after insertion, while others may take a few weeks to experience a definite alleviation of their symptoms.
HOW LONG WILL THE GREAT BENEFITS OF THE PELLET LASTS?
In women, pellets usually last between three and five months and in men between four and six months.
DO PELLETS HAVE TO BE REMOVED AFTER A WHILE?
No, the pellets do not need to be removed since they completely dissolve inside the body.
CAN PELLETS BE REMOVED ONCE INSERTED?
No, once inserted, the pellets cannot be retrieved or removed. The dissolving process begins immediately upon insertion and cannot be reversed once introduced.
WHAT ARE THE RISKS OF PELLETS?
The most common risk associated with pellet insertion is temporary minor bruising. Other rare but possible risks are bleeding at the entry site, infection, and the rarest is extrusion of the pellet. The risk for complications is reduced by strict adherence to the provided the post-op instructions. After pellet insertion, it’s best to avoid lower body vigorous physical activity for two days. Early physical activity is a cause of extrusion, which is a pellet working its way out. Antibiotics may be prescribed if a patient is diabetic or has had a joint replaced or has tendency to get infections. In most people, however, antibiotics are rarely needed.
In women, another rare risks caused by testosterone increase in facial hair or acne especially, but this is only evident with high dosages.
DO I NEED TO TAKE PROGESTERONE SUPPLEMENTS WHEN I AM ON PELLETS?
Yes, if you still have a uterus you will be given sublingual (under the tongue) rapidly absorbing progesterone tablets, usually taken either in the morning or in the evening or maybe both. It is imperative that you are diligent and adhere to this regimen to avoid sudden return of periods or vaginal bleeding.
WHY DO WE NOT HEAR MORE ABOUT HORMONE PELLETS?
Hormone optimization by pellets have been around since the 1940s. Hormone pellets have been extensively inserted and researched in Europe and Australia. In the US big pharma synthetic oral hormones have been popular in the past four decades but recently it’s been established that synthetic unnatural hormones has serious side effects, which led the American public, like the Europeans and Australians, to return to the bio-identical (human-identical) hormone pellet supplementation. Further research has been conducted in the US and, like most research, it is ongoing.
If your primary care physician or gynecologist says that there is no research to support the use of pellet implants, he/she is wrong. There is a difference between “no research” and not knowing about or having read the research.
WHAT IS THE COST OF PELLETS AND PELLET INSERTION?
In women, the standard cost of inserting pellets is $250. The additional cost of the pellets themselves vary from person-to-person depending on both the type and number of pellets to be inserted. In men, the pricing varies more, depending on the nature of the procedure and how many pellets will be inserted.
DO MEN BENEFIT FROM HORMONE THERAPY?
Male testosterone levels start to decline in their early 30s. However, lucky few men maintain sufficient levels of testosterone into their 80s. Scientifically speaking, any man who show signs or suffers from symptoms of testosterone deficiency should be evaluated and tested. Even men in their 30s may experience bone density loss, sluggishness, fatigue, depression, difficulty sleeping, erectile dysfunction, mental and cognitive decline as a result to testosterone deficiency and most men should be screened and optimized when indicated by age 50. It is never too late to benefit from testosterone optimization. In my daily practice most men in their 50s and 60s, even with multitude of symptoms have never been once tested for male hormone deficiency. This is a result of lack of knowledge, mostly. But personal beliefs, or fear of the unknown may also prevent men from receiving the entitled lifetime benefits of hormonal optimization.
HORMONE THERAPY FOR WOMEN
Estrogen is a woman’s most important hormone. Studies have shown that, without hormone replacement therapy, the loss of estrogen puts you at increased risk for premature ovary failure, osteoporosis, heart disease, colon cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, tooth loss, impaired vision, Parkinson’s disease, and diabetes. The longer a woman is without the protection of estrogen, the greater the risk for serious health consequences from these conditions.
There are estrogen receptors in a variety of organs throughout the body. That’s why hormonal imbalance produces different symptoms such as loss of skin elasticity, bone shrinkage, moodiness and cognitive decline. On the other hand, when estrogen levels rise as they do in the first week of menses, their overall effect is to increase the amount of serotonin available in the brain that improves mood. Within the brain, estrogen may act as a natural antidepressant and mood stabilizer.
Studies have shown that testosterone hormone therapy can provide a woman with mental clarity, increased libido, and muscle tone and mass. When this hormone is at low levels, women often complain of mental confusion, weight gain, and poor muscle tone — even with regular exercise.
The effect of hormone deficiency on the brain, muscles, bone, heart, and metabolism can be significant without hormone replacement therapy for women, and it can be dangerous to long-term health. The brain needs normal amounts of testosterone in balance with estrogen to produce serotonin, which supports emotional balance. When lacking in these hormones, a woman will experience emotional instability that often results in increased anxiety, irritability, sleep disturbances, anger, sadness, and depression.
The musculoskeletal system is also adversely affected by the loss of testosterone. By not having bio-identical hormone therapy, the deficiency or imbalance of testosterone can lead to muscle and bone loss and pain in the muscles and joints.
HORMONE THERAPY FOR MEN
Studies have shown that men begin losing testosterone at a rate of 3% to 10% per year beginning at age 30. Current medical research now recognizes the male equivalent to menopause, “andropause.” Because the testosterone used is totally natural, it is ideal for men who want the benefits of a bio-identical hormone without the drawbacks of synthetic medication.
Symptoms of testosterone deficiency in men include fatigue, lack of mental acuity, loss of libido, and difficulty achieving or sustaining an erection. Why bio-identical hormone pellet therapy for men? Hormonal needs for men have received national attention, but with marginal treatment options available. Hormonal treatments for men can be expensive, require daily consumption, and, in many cases, need to be carefully timed with their partner’s needs for normal sexual activities and pleasure.
Bio-identical hormone pellet therapy is the only delivery method of testosterone therapy that gives sustained and consistent testosterone levels throughout the day — for four to six months — without any “roller coaster” blood levels of testosterone, which can result in mood and energy fluctuations for the patient.
BioTE® Medical has had excellent results treating men with bio-identical hormone therapy.
Men find themselves lacking in sexual desire, gaining weight, losing muscle mass, and feeling sluggish, depressed and irritable. Yet, they believe they must endure these body and hormonal changes as part of aging. It is time to consider visit our clinic in Indianapolis to enhance your health.
